The 6th Nordic conference on eHealth and Telemedicine was a great success! Jarmo Reponen, Vicepresident of the Nordic Telemedicine Association The NCeHT2006 conference in Helsinki was a great success with more than 250 participants from 26 countries. Major foreign delegations outside Nordic countries came from Lithuania and Japan! This shows that long Nordic experience within eHealth and telemedicine has been recognised also outside Scandinavia. The scientific program was for the first time extended outside traditional telemedicine and had a strong emphasis in eHealth and citizen centered services. The selected theme “From Tools to Services” reflected this accurately. This change of focus is following both the national development in the Nordic member countries as well as the current EU policies. The keynote speeches gave fresh thoughts from USA, EU and Japan as well as from local government and research partners. The high quality scientific program and most of the presentations are now available at the conference website (http://www.nceht2006.org).
The first round of biannual Nordic conferences since 1996 had an emphasis in telemedicine, the second round will have more focus in eHealth. Local organisers in Iceland and Denmark have already promised to take the challenge in the coming years.
Nordic Telemedicine Association (NTA) has been recently active also in the Nordic Telemedicine Collaboration Forum financed by Nordic Minister Council. The idea is to recognise obstacles for cross-border telemedicine and to find possible solutions. The report from the Nordic Telemedicine Collaboration Forum is publised by the Nordic Minister Counil at http://www.norden.org/pub/velfaerd/social_helse/sk/ANP2007709.pdf While the five Nordic countries plus three autonomous areas have similar level of medical standards and a common cultural heritage, they can continue their pioneering efforts also in this area. NTA has now a very interesting future ahead. Telemedicine has become a reality with the introduction of national eHealth policies.
As a member of national telemedicine or Health societies you will have access to a lively network of experts and users. I will encourage you to visit these web pages often and also make active contact with the members of the NTA board. Jarmo Reponen |
